Bass lessons

I am dedicated to training all aspects and elements of music and bass playing, aiming at fostering the student’s innate musical talent, and building a skill set tailored for each individual student. Lessons are not merely an exercise in the mechanical recitation of conditioned responses. Instead, the hour’s curriculum is adjusted dynamically according to abilities currently in development.

Well-rounded bass training with Tenth Choir Music includes mastery of:

  • Instrument basics: learning the names of each part of the instrument (head, fretboard, etc.) and every note across the fretboard, as well as specialized left- and right-hand playing techniques..
  • Rhythm instruction and drills: understanding time signatures, meter, tempo and tempo changes, rhythmic subdivisions, complex meters, changes in pulse, and polyrhythms.
  • Techniques: practicing techniques such as pick playing, harmonics, finger picking, slapping and many others
  • Ear training: hearing and identifying intervals, comprehending consonance and dissonance, developing the voice and inner ear.
  • Music theory: learning the circle of fifths and other theoretical conventions as well as developing an understanding of melody, harmony and progressions.
  • Sight reading: cultivating the ability to read progressively more challenging music drawn from jazz, classical and contemporary music, incorporating dynamic markings as written by the composer.
  • Expressiveness: being able to play with a full range of emotion and sensitivity, from a delicate whisper to an explosion of volume.
  • Holistic development: incorporating simple breathing, stretching and strengthening exercises to develop mind-body unity.
  • Composition and songwriting: enabling the student’s innate creativity to fully manifest itself through understanding and practicing basic, intermediate and advanced songwriting skills.
  • Improvisation: freeing the inner muse to foster a free flow of musical creativity.
  • Co-creation: learning to play in a group environment, fostering the ability to listen to all players at once, knowing when to step into the spotlight and when to fall back.
